Banned Books

a book sitting on a table beside people having dinner

Each month we get together to discuss a banned book. While many would prefer to shy away from these books, I’ve found them to be the ones that bring community together the most and help us all push against our comfort zone to understand a wider world.

When you join us for a Banned Books event, you’ll receive:

  • Dinner at The Red House, including custom designed drinks, appetizers, 3-4 course dinner, and delicious dessert.

  • A copy of the book sent directly to you.

  • Opportunity to build community with a group of amazing women.

  • First access to all new events.

There are only 8 seats available each month, so don’t delay in registering.

Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby Jr.
$75.00

June 9, 2026 - 6-8pm

Described by various reviewers as hellish and obscene, Last Exit to Brooklyn tells the stories of New Yorkers who at every turn confront the worst excesses in human nature. Yet there are moments of exquisite tenderness in these troubled lives.

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
$75.00

September 29, 2026 - 6-8pm

With stunning urgency and grace, Ocean Vuong writes of people caught between disparate worlds, and asks how we heal and rescue one another without forsaking who we are. The question of how to survive, and how to make of it a kind of joy, powers the most important debut novel of many years.

The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie
$75.00

October 20, 2026 - 6-8pm

Just before dawn one winter's morning, a hijacked jetliner explodes above the English Channel. Through the falling debris, two figures, Gibreel Farishta, the biggest star in India, and Saladin Chamcha, an expatriate returning from his first visit to Bombay in fifteen years, plummet from the sky, washing up on the snow-covered sands of an English beach, and proceed through a series of metamorphoses, dreams, and revelations.

Testimonials

  • "Jessica is not only a fabulous cook, she’s a really phenomenal facilitator who knows how to draw out people’s perspectives. If you’re someone who’s maybe a little bit quieter, more hesitant to share, she’s really great at helping everyone feel welcome and holding that space for people."

    -Erica

  • "Jessica’s welcoming and accepting. There’s no judgment with her, and she challenges others. That’s something that’s kind of fun. She challenges you to think outside the box."

    -Paulene

  • “I REALLY enjoyed the book club meeting! From the food to the conversation, it was all wonderful!”
